Alternate Braced Wall Panel

This method, described in IRC R602.10.6, IBC 2308.9.3.1, UBC2320.11.4, is the similar to Method 3 of the conventional braced wall provisions, however it allows for walls to be built as narrow as 2’-8” provided that holdowns, additional anchor bolts, and for two-story structures additional nails and sheathing are also installed. These wall segments can be used to replace any braced wall panel in the non-continuously or continuously sheathed method. Framing requirements vary for one- or two-story structures as described in the figure below.

Considerations

  • Refer to New Alternate Braced Wall Panel for an even narrower options
  • Walls must be supported directly on a foundation
  • Additional foundation reinforcement is required
  • One-story structures can use Simpson HTT16, HDU2, or STHD10 holdowns
  • Two-story structures can use Simpson HTT16, HDU4, or STHD10 holdowns
