Wall Bracing: Standard Installation

Where exactly do these braced walls go?
Braced-wall panels shall begin no more than 12 1/2 ft. from each end of a braced-wall line (8 ft. for IBC SDC D-E and IRC SDC D0-D2 provide IRC R602.11 requirements are met). The number of braced-wall panels shall be based on the minimum percentages of wall bracing as specified in IRC Table R602.10.1 and panels shall be spaced no more than 25 ft. on-center along the braced-wall line. It is also allowable to have up to a 4 ft. offset and still maintain the same braced-wall line. See splice requirements.

What’s an offset?
An offset is when there is a break in the wall line, for example, for a porch and front door, or a bay window. The code allows up to a 4 ft. offset on a braced‑wall line. If there is more than a 4 ft. offset, the code requires that you must start a new braced-wall line, which results in additional braced-wall panels.

Foundation Design
The Strong Frame™ ordinary moment frame wall-bracing solutions contained in this catalog require foundations that are engineered to resist the forces generated. The following bracing tables contain anchorage solutions to attached the moment frame to various foundation types. For complete footing and grade‑beam solutions, including size and reinforcing, refer to Strong Frame catalog pages 59 and 60 (PDF).
