Engineering Manager, Tyrell Gilb Laboratory

Stockton, CA

Position Summary:

Simpson Strong-Tie is searching for an exceptional candidate to run our state-of-the-art large scale structures laboratory in Stockton, CA. The Tye Gilb Lab is the hub of our large scale test capabilities. Visit our SE blog for a glimpse of what the lab does.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

% Time Job Responsibilities
35% Lab Operations
Oversee the lab operations including: Facility security, maintenance and cleanliness, providing preventative and corrective maintenance of all laboratory equipment, maintaining and implementing the Laboratory Quality Manual in support of company requirements and current laboratory accreditation, maintaining a secure environment with respect to proprietary communications, products, and ideas
35% Test Management
Responsible for the scheduling of all test projects including material acquisition, assembly timetables, and physical testing. Provide technical oversight to all large scale test requests submitted to the lab working with the design engineers to ensure that we capture accurate data. Manage personal test projects assigned.
20% Personnel Management
Responsible for the management of the Tye Gilb Laboratory Technicians. In this you shall lead, motivate and direct employees using effective performance management techniques, including establishing expectations and goals, providing recognition and feedback, and addressing performance problems. Coach, encourage, and develop employees according to their unique interests and strengths. Empower employees to take responsibility for their career and performance. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback. Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members and the organization.
5% Collaboration with other laboratories
5% Additional tasks as directed by the Director of Engineering or the Vice President of Engineering

Education & Certification Requirements:

Required or Preferred Degree or Certification
Required Bachelors Degree in a technical field. Bachelors of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering preferred.
Preferred Understanding of basic structural engineering, seismic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, hydraulic power transmission, principles of data acquisition, and statistics.

Minimum Experience:

5 years Laboratory management and/or relevant engineering experience.
2 years Managing individuals and/or projects independently with decision making responsibilities.
