Field Engineer – Cold Formed Steel

Position Summary:

Work with a diverse group of individuals as a TEAM to develop relationships within the commercial construction industry, with a heavy emphasis on Cold Formed Steel connections. Utilize your technical expertise to build trust with our business partners (Engineers, Contractors, Distribution, City Governments) through developing solutions to help their projects finish on time and under budget. This position requires the right blend of engineering skill and the ability to apply a sales process. These talents will be used to create value-engineered solutions and influence key decision makers on their course of action. The position will be expected to present relevant engineered solutions to design professionals as well review plans, walk on jobsites to evaluate needs and offer Simpson products that help our partners meet their goals. The position will provide support at trade shows, industry events and workshops.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

30% Establish and maintain relationships with design professionals and specifiers, in an effort to obtain the specification of Simpson Strong-Tie products.
20% Utilize engineering background to develop relationships with major contractors, developing value-engineered solutions for their day to day challenges.
20% Work closely with the Simpson sales team and the distribution chain to Identify sales opportunities and move the project from prospect through completion.
10% Conduct technical presentations for individuals, groups and professional associations; focusing on both general technical knowledge as well as the advantages and use of Simpson Strong-Tie products.
10% Develop solutions for a wide variety of applications using your experience, product knowledge and training.
10% Identify new products and testing opportunities. Assist in development and review of technical literature.

Education & Certification Requirements:

Required or Preferred Degree or Certification
Required Licensed Professional Engineer, P.E.
Required B.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
Preferred Licensed Structural Engineer, S.E.


Years Type of Experience
3 Years Related Engineering experience.
2 Years Experience in the Cold-Formed Steel industry including, experience with load-bearing and non-load bearing CFS construction methods, details and practices preferred.
3 Years Computer experience (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, ACAD, various design software).

Construction Practical working knowledge of common concrete, light-frame steel, and structural steel construction methods.
Product knowledge General knowledge of Anchors; Cold-Formed Steel connectors. Knowledge of fasteners, wood connectors and lateral systems product lines is preferred. Understand product performance and use their features to create monetary value for key decision makers.
Customer focus Quickly and effectively solve customer problems and maintain productive internal and external customer relationships. Readily readjust priorities to respond to pressing and changing customer needs. Recognize potentially adverse customer reactions and develop better alternatives.

Computer Skills Excellent proficiency in Microsoft software environment including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and Powerpoint. Experience with AutoCAD, BlueBeam Revu (PDF), Simpson Strong-Tie software & web applications, Bluebeam and TechSmith SnagIt Editor a plus.

Travel Required / %: This job requires domestic/international travel, 25% of the time.

This full-time, exempt position will support the Southwestern U.S. (Southern California, Arizona; Las Vegas, NV; New Mexico and El Paso, Texas), with a focus in LA, Orange and San Diego Counties. The position will be based out of the employee's home office; preferably in Los Angeles or Orange County.

Relocation will not be considered for this position.
