Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Pleasanton, CA

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

% Time Job Responsibilities
40% Identify requirements and facilitate for lean manufacturing and other improvement or innovation projects. Such as:
  • Smart Manufacturing
  • Lights out Manufacturing/Warehouse
  • High speed production quality control, high speed camera
  • Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), data collection standardization
  • PLC Standardization
  • Equipment setup standardization (Equipment Setup Instruction)
  • Print on demand and box labeling standardization
  • Identifying and selecting local automation vendors
15% Implement ideas, concepts and automation projects. Research current automation industry trends for applicability. Develop long range automation plans.
15% Evaluate, financially justify and implement projects to drive cost reduction and manufacturing process improvement.
10% Coordinate and standardize automation processes and facilitate knowledge transfer and best practices.
10% Design and develop standard operating procedures, diagrams and references for automation projects. Develop training instructions and/or conduct initial training of branch employees on operation and maintenance of systems
10% Develop requests for proposals for complex automation projects and programs. Select, contract and manage automation integrators.

Education & Certification Requirements

Required or Preferred Degree or Certification
Required Bachelor’s Degree in related engineering discipline
Preferred Certified Automation Professional
Preferred Master's Degree
Preferred LEAN or Six Sigma Certification

Minimum Experience

Years Type of Experience
3 year Experience with industrial/mechanical control, PLC process controls, plant electrical systems, equipment instrumentation, variable frequency drives, human/machine interface and equipment operation.
3 year Experience with robotics, palletizing and packaging
2 year Experience in hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems (preferred)
2 year Experience with machine vision systems
2 year Project management experience

Writing Ability to write in a clear, concise, organized and convincing manner for the intended audience
Reading Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, drawings, schematics, blueprints and electrical code
Analysis/Reasoning Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
Attention to detail Ability to diligently attend to details and pursue quality in accomplishing tasks
Teamwork Ability to build and sustain cooperative working relationships
Computer CAD or Automation modeling software, Windows based computer skills (Outlook, Excel and Word), MS Project/Smartsheet or other project management software

Travel Required / %: This job requires domestic and international travel, up to 35% of the time.

This full-time, exempt position could potentially work from any of our major manufacturing locations, remote from home, but preferably from our Pleasanton, CA home office. (Please note that working from a location other than Pleasanton, CA would incur more travel time.)
